As a consumer one of the smartest moves is to avoid companies that have obvious conflicts of interest. Much like avoiding mold testing companies that perform remediation and vice versa it is also important to avoid companies that analyze their own samples.
This can be a little trickier than avoiding remediation companies that also perform testing because some testing companies try to pass their internal laboratory off as an independent laboratory. Unless the consumer does some online research it would be easy to be deceived.
Here are a few things to look for in a legitimate independent lab:
Do they have their EMLAP & EMPAT Certifications?
They should have these certifications available for viewing on their website.
There really isn't any benefit for a consumer to use a company that does not send all of their samples off to an independent laboratory for analysis. It really does open the door to potential conflicts of interest and raises questions about the accuracy of the results.
